Completing My First Book     Text/Cheng-wei Huang

I wanted to produce a book about the Yuanlin Railway, but I didn’t know what to start with. With the guidance of Teacher Mei-tu, a village history writer, and my mother, I started with reading Crossing Nanping Village, written by Teacher Mei-tu, and taking notes about events of the Yuanlin Railway and neighborhoods. Then, I decided to use the Railway Silo, Taiwan Sugar South Yuanlin Station, and Sugar Railway bicycle trail as the theme of the book. Finally, I went to a bookstore to find a railroad grid picture to decorate the book for making it livelier. I thought it was difficult to produce the book, but actually it’s not. I am very pleased to have completed my first book from which I learned valuable lessons! I let the book to remain in my alma mater, Jingsiou Station, so that more people could enjoy it.

Building a Small Train for My Alma Mater

                                                                                           Text/Cheng-wei Huang

I always wanted to build a small train independently. I’ve visited the bookstore three times and the hardware store twice. Since I often looked for materials for building a small steam train while I walked, I got more and more ideas. The materials, such as corrugated board, straws, Yuanlin wood, foam glue, and others, look simple, but it needs some wisdom to put them together! First, I fastened the wheels to both ends of a stick with nails and added a straw in the middle to make the wheels roll. Then, I drew train passenger cars, cut them down patiently, and used the foam glue to adhere joints. As for the connection between train passenger cars, I used chains. At last, I glued two people to decorate the train. I only spent two days to make the small movable train. When I shared it with the team, Teacher Mei-tu asked to interview me and record a video. Thanks to the teacher who posted the video to YouTube right away, which made my wish of sharing the small train with everyone become true. I let the small steam train remain in Jingsiou Station, my alma mater. I feel it is meaningful to pass down the love.
