Changhua was formerly known as “Huangsi”, which denotes to “sulphur creek”. Two possible explanations are as follows:
“The Nine Prodigies of Huangsi” refers to local calligraphy literati in Changhua County who aspire to emulate the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou” due to their consensus with the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou’s view of artistic creation.

- Sulphur: two Chinese characters “石” (meaning “stone”) and”黃” (meaning ”yellow”) were combined together to form the new character “磺” (sulphur) because of the yellowish water near the stony Dadu River.
- Sulphur Creek: Bagua Mountain hot springs, which contained a great wealth of sulphur, streamed to the adjacent Changhua City and resulted in the name “Sulphur Creek”.
