About Mr.Jiahua Lou

Above his glasses are two dark and thick eyebrows, he is short and thin, he has a soft voice, but his passion toward calligraphy is powerful . The man who is a part of The Nine Eccentrics of Huangxi, Mr.Jiahua Lou.

Started from scratch
There were a lot of learning experiences and stories of his past, he chose to join the calligraphy club in Taichung Teacher College because he got complimented from his teacher in elementary school . These inspired him to delve into the world  of calligraphy, and participated in some competitions, earning many awards. After graduated from Teacher College, he continued to study with Mr. Jiang. So the teacher who effected Mr. Lou the most was Mr. Jiang.

Practices and Competitions
Learning a new things requires a lot of time, though he sacrificed  his free time, he never felt tired and got a lot of encouragement from his teachers. His only target was to improve his skill and to become better and better. He always grasp every contest opportunity, this pressure had made him concentrate on practicing .In 1991, he got first place on National Art Exhibition,  the result both surprised and pleased him. After engaging in teaching, he still like to encourage his students to join more contest, and to know that the journey is more important than the destination . Trying to learn from the contest is the most generous reward.

Create one’s own
Mr. Lou preferred to stay in a quiet place ,with beautiful music, a cup of tea or coffee, and let his mind calm down. In this situation, you can focus on the work.” When you create a new piece, it requires new ideas and a unique style, it takes time to practice, and pursues improvement.“ Mr. Lou said: “his idea referenced  other master’s  work, or based on the theme of a competition. In the beginning,  he wrote in regular script,  but in fact, he preferred to write in cursive script. The  important thing is to create one’s own style.

Appreciate beautiful things
Mr. Lou’s family all like calligraphy art, he practiced with  his dad since he was a little boy. Even now, his daughter is studying in university, she   would write with her dad when she was back home, it was a wonderful memory when their family got together. He figured out that compliments are important to students, he mentioned a time when he was inspecting the students’ projects, as that semester was their first contact with calligraphy, Mr. Lou allowed  students to write spring couplets. All the students performed very well, he decided to give them high grades, so the students have a stronger motivation to learn more and more.

Communication in Nine Eccentrics of Huangxi
The five guys, Zongso Zhao, Zhixin Lou, Beiyuan Zhang, Rongsen Huang and Jiahua Lou, are all members of Nine Eccentrics of Huangxi. At that time, Mr. Lou was writing a paper about The Nine Eccentrics of Yangzhou ,because they all lived in Changhua city, and had a common interest, they started the Nine Eccentrics of Huangxi. They had meetings, joined some competitions, hosted exhibitions, and expressed their different styles.

There was one special experience for them at Yuanlin High School, the parapet wall is long and short , and they challenged  writing “The Red Cliff” on it,  the nine guys took turns to work hard, it was an unforgettable memory. Another time at the Culture Center, they worked on the different fabrics and cloth. They felt amazing to integrate the art into life experience.

You can do it
Mr. Lou is currently teaching at Jian Guo Technology University, some of his students has the same situation as him, they would like to pick their interest, and go back to  school.   He met a student who was strongly interested in art, so he decided to study for master degree at National Taiwan University of Arts, but he only had learned calligraphy, and never studied for painting, so ,Mr. Lou advised him to study painting with Mr. Liandong Zhuang, after two years of hard work, he successfully enter his dream school .After getting his master degree, he continued to study for Ph.D. A really brave man should face his fear and be himself!

Calligraphy isn’t stress
In the current education environment, regarding the issues of promoting calligraphy at elementary schools. Mr. Lou though: , Time and hard work are necessary for a difficult or important task. Calligraphy is used in self-cultivation, and meditation . This stage should focus on cultivating students' interest, the teachers should give the students more compliments and encouragement, and not too much pressure. We must build the sense of appreciation, this the number one requirement.

Training world view
Why do we choose to visit museums when we travel to foreign countries? But do you know how many Taiwanese have actually been to National Palace Museum? Most  Japanese tourists like to visit National Palace Museum. In Japan, the calligraphy collections are very expensive, but the country still spend a lot of  funds and resources to support the art.  Two years ago, Japan made a film called” Shodo Girls: Watashitachi no Koshien”, Shodo Girls tells the story of three high school girls who revived the depression-battered town by organizing a performance calligraphy competition. This is what we should learn from them. Now, most people who visit the Palace Museum are Chinese tourists. They emphasize calligraphy in their education in their country. Therefore, let’s strengthen our ability right away.
