Interview with Mr. Ming-liang Liao

Mr. Liao taught in National Er-lin Industrial and Commercial Vocational High School and is retired now. He admired his office staff, directory Jin-liang Wang, who was often invited to write congratulation posters and activity slogans for people, so he participated on Takasaki Calligraphy Club. Mr. Hsieh-tze Chen was his teacher, who taught him Yan’s regular script, Ou’s running script, and Zhu’s standard cursive. Later, Chen-chuan Li and Mr. Long-da Lin taught him too.

Mr. Ding-qi Chen (alias Tian-he) impacted him the most in his calligraphy. In the Summer Calligraphy Study Camp for middle school teachers held by Taichung City Government Cultural Affairs Bureau, the instructor Mr. Chen wanted everyone to write calligraphy then and there. When other students were confused with how to write without table and chair, Mr. Liao sat on the ground and started to write. Mr. Chen praised his performance, and showed him how to write right there. Mr. Chen is his model for his diligence on promoting calligraphy at the senior age.

The biggest worry in learning calligraphy is encountering bottleneck. Patience and persistence are needed at this moment. We can only concentrate, practice harder, and ask for help to break through the bottleneck. Participation on a competition is an experience of self-affirmation in learning procedure. His first calligraphy competition was National Art Exhibition for Governmental and Educational Employees. He often practiced at midnight for few hours. He was physically over drafted with working at daytime and writing calligraphy at night. However, the results and happiness of winning awards always made him forget the hard time. He likes to drink tea before writing calligraphy. He believes that it consists of materials for my creation everywhere. He printed his works on business cards to share with people who like calligraphy.

Mr. Long-da Lin once said that we should not keep the concept of “master-prentice system”, so that everyone could find one’s own style after merging the techniques and mind and potentially surpass one’s master. His background was mechanical engineering, so his family was surprised that he chose to learn calligraphy. After learning calligraphy for twenty to thirty years, he participated in international exhibitions and exchanges and became a director general. His families gave a lot of support and affirmation.

As far as the director general position of Changhua County Calligraphy Association, the primary requirement is a member who has passion to promote calligraphy art and elected by members in general meeting. The primary job of the position is to manage association affairs and to promote calligraphy art such as calligraphy exhibitions, calligraphy seminars, international exchanges, local art activities, and calligraphy instruction.

There are about 100 calligraphy associations nationwide. After taking the director general position of Changhua County Calligraphy Association, He would like to strengthen the association fellowship, hold seminars, exchange ideas with national and international associations, care the incorporation of calligraphy theory with techniques, and promote the humanity of calligraphy to every corner of the society, so that we all could appreciate the beauty of calligraphy art.

Mr. Tzong-song Chao invited him to participate in NPH. The biggest feature of this club is that there are only few members, and every member has his own calligraphy style. The members can imitate and learn from each other. Also, this club sets up writing topic for each member to create and then get together to discuss. This is very special. In recent years, Changhua County won many prizes in national calligraphy competitions. The promotion of calligraphy in Changhua County already grabbed the attention of the nation. Mr. Liao hopes that the incorporation of the traditional and modern calligraphic concepts will create a new calligraphic style for new age.
