Visit the National Yuanlin Senior High School

1. Activity background:
After hearing so much about the participation of the “The Nine Prodigies of  Huangsi” in producing calligraphic works for the Literary Gallery at National Yuanlin Senior High School and considering the geographical proximity of Chingsau Elementary School and National Yuanlin Senior High School, Chingsau Elementary School believed that giving up such a great opportunity to get close to works from distinguished calligraphers and interact with another school in the same community would be a shame, and consequently conceived the idea of visiting National Yuanlin Senior High School.

3. Activity content:
Director Tsai at National Yuanlin Senior High School briefly expounded on the initial intention of embellishing the environment by installing the Literary Gallery, and the glorious scene when the “The Nine Prodigies of  Huangsi” and other calligraphy masters from all walks of life call came to the Literary Gallery. Further, students conducted individual visit, search, and analysis of calligraphic works in accordance with a study sheet designed by school teachers. Admiring a total of 16 calligraphy masters’ works at the Literary Gallery, we were fascinated by the beauty of Chinese calligraphy in various styles. Some calligraphic characters were as cursive as “flying dragons and dancing phoenixes”, some were vigorous and forceful, and still some others were adorable and amusing, which all surprised us with the marvelous and versatile rendering of calligraphy.

4. Afterthoughts
Under the gallery covered by bunches of purplish Thunbergia, there were flying butterflies, chirping birds, and a whiff of aromatic ink and tea in the air. It is hard to imagine this place, which used to be sealed by cold iron windows and rundown rain shelters, could be turned into such a wonderland after some brilliant ideas and revamp. Rather than being a branch of arts, Chinese calligraphy is also a cultural treasure that touches people’s heart and is close to the life of human beings.
