Around four hundred years ago, there was a group of Taiwanese Plains Indigenous Peoples living on the southeast plain in Changhua; their tribe was named Da Wu Jun She. The Hans usually called the area where Taiwanese Plains Indigenous Peoples lived in “She”. “Shetou” refers to the place where its leader lived and thus, the place gained its name “Shetou”.
Agricultural-wise, besides growing rice of good quality, Shetou is also known as Guava Kingdom. Its Crystal Guavas (水晶芭樂) and Pearl Guavas (珍珠芭樂) are finely reputed as having high economic value. Other fruits growing there such as litchis, longans, pineapples and white pomelos also enjoy great popularity.
Shetou, moreover, is worthy of the name “The Hometown of Hosiery”. In the 1970s, 70% of the hosiery in Taiwan was produced in Shetou, creating an impressive export performance. Lately, as the Hosiery Industrial Park construction is being planned, the clustering efficiency of the industry is to be expected.
