When carving the puppets, the logs that are most often used are camphor wood, Paulownia wood, and Selangan Batu, which commonly refers to as whitewood. Before carving the woods, the woods are cropped into the width and height that are needed for puppets' head.
After woods are chopped into cubic forms, they fix the necks and facial features into the places where they should be.
After the facial expressions are fixed, they carve the shape of them more precisely.
This stage is one of the most important stages in making puppets. Sculptors must intricately touch up the facial expressions of the puppets.
After finishing making puppets' heads, they need to grind the heads to make them smooth.
After grinding, the heads need to be level flat with putty to make them more solid. To make sure that puppets' heads are smooth, they will grind them once more.
After finishing the previous process, the heads will be coated with special white paint. Afterwards, they will wait for them to be air-dried; then they grind and paint them with special white paint again.
When finishing putting on the white coat, they will mix the paint into the color which puppets' heads need. Paint them two or three times in a row, and then, wait for them to be air-dried.
After putting on the pink paint, they color the eyeballs, the whites of the eyes, eyelashes, eyebrows, mouths. Lastly, they put on a layer of celluloid paint which finishes up the process of coloring.
According to the puppets' characters, they are matched with different hats, crowns, and accessories.
