On the face of the character “Sheng”, there is no special color. He looks delicate and gentle.
They can be subdivided into the following characters:
  •    ●Tong Zi Sheng (童仔生): He is a child in Glove Puppetry.
  •    ●Wen Sheng (文生):He is a scholar. Most of the time, he is poor in Glove Puppetry.The poor scholars are often shabbily-clad, and yet, once they achieve success, they dress up and bring honor to the family name.
  •    ●Wu Sheng (武生): He is skilled in martial arts. He always helps the weak. We Song (武松) is one of the most classic Wu Shengs.
  •    ●Xu Wen (鬚文): He is usually a man in his middle age with black beard.
  •    ●Chan Wen (摻文): He is a man with beard that mixes black with white. The one with pure white beard is called Cun Gong (村公).

Every female in Glove Puppetry is called Dan. According to Dans’ hair style, appearances and clothes, their personalities differ. Jiao Zong Dan (角鬃旦) is innocent; Yuan Mei Dan (圓眉旦) is goegeous; Da Tou Dan (大頭旦) is funny and likable; Bai Fa Dan (白髮旦) is tender and respectable.
  •    ●Xiao Dan (小旦): She is a young girl.
  •    ●Lao Dan (老旦): She is an elder woman or a matchmaker.
  •    ●Du Dan (獨旦): She is a widow.
  •    ●Jia Po Dan (家婆旦):She is a matchmaker.
  •    ●Sha Show Dan (殺手旦):She is a ruthless bad woman.
  •    ●Bai Mao Dan (白毛日):She is a woman with white hair. Lao Tai Jun (老太君) in Yang Jia Jiang (楊家將) is a Bai Mao Dan.

Jing is a character with a painted face, mainly painted into red, black and blue.
  •    ●Hong Hua Lian (紅花臉):He is a representation of honesty and loyalty. Hong Hua Zai (紅花仔) is the one without beard whereas Hong Da Hua (紅大花) is the one with beard.
  •    ●Hei Hua Lian (黑花臉):He is ill-tempered but upright. Hei Hua Zai (黑花仔) is the one without beard whereas Hei Da Hua (黑大花) is the one with beard.
  •    ●Qing Hua Lain (青花臉):He is evil, often a villain and a robber. Qing Bai Hua (青白花) is the one without beard whereas Qing Da Hua (青大花) is the one with beard.

Mo is a division of Lao Sheng (老生). He is an elderly man, approaching to the end of his life.
There are two types of Mo:
The one that talks is called Bai Kuo (白闊) and the one that stays mute is called Cun Gong (村公). Their hair and beards are as white as snow.

Chou, as its name suggests, is a clown. He is the comic sidekick in Glove Puppetry. He always acts comically and talks humorously –although humorous but his words are at the same time educational. Chou is either laughably stupid, sly, or clever, fully reflecting the society. If there was no Chou in Glove Puppetry, it would not be as interesting as it now is.
There are many different types of Chou, who are often nobody:
  •    ●San Hua (三花) is also called Wen Chou (文丑). He is often a player.
  •    ●Da Tou Zai (大頭仔) is simple-minded and honest. He is a great fit for a servant or a follower.
  •    ●Other types of Chou all have their own characteristics.

Those characters that do not belong to Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, and Chou are classified as Za.
For example, monk, celestial old man, god and spirit, demon, handyman, lackey, weirdo, cavalry, including Sun Wu Kong (孫悟空), Zhu Ba Jie (豬八戒).
