Home > Introduction on Glove Puppetry > The Origin of the name Glove Puppetry

We did an inductive research based on the information we received from many experts, scholars, and folk artists about the origin of the name Glove Puppetry. The probable origin stemmed from the following classification: the shape of the puppets, the mode of the stages, the tools that contain puppets and the sacks that are used to put puppets in when performing.

  •    ●Except for glove puppet’s heads, palms and feet which are made of wood, their torsos and limbs are made of cotton cloth. They are cubic-shaped, looking like a square sack (sack in Chinese is bu dai; glove puppetry in Chinese is bu dai xi)
  •    ●In the previous ages, the stages they use for performance were simply constructed, looking like a big sack.
  •    ●After performing, all the puppets are put in a big sack for convenient transportation.
  •    ●During the performance, for convenient arrangement and usage, performers throw the used puppets into a sack hung along the stage.
