By the time his father Tu Wu changed his profession to Glove Puppetry, Qing Fa had already been seven years old. Tu Wu could only play Peikuan musical instruments, trumpet and drum; he did not know how to operate glove puppets. Therefore, he had to hire a master to assist with operating the puppets and Qing Fa was demanded to learn the knack.
“It was my father's wish for me to learn Glove Puppetry. I was still young, so it wasn't my own will. I only followed my father's command.” His father's word of command spurred him on to learn Glove Puppetry.

From seven to ten years old, Qing Fa had been learning from the master. He followed him to perform Glove Puppetry and when he was not performing, he went to study at Ching Shan Elementary School. Although he called it “learning”, Qing Fa explained, “ Former Maters did not teach, so I had to stealthily learn the knack when watching the master performing on stage.”

Qing Fa had been an apprentice assisting the performance of Glove Puppetry until he was thirteen. When his knack had ripened, he began to play the leading role in the puppetry. When he was around sixteen, the thought of establishing his own troupe surfaced.

“New Paradise”was a famous cigarette brand. Tu Wu and Qing Fa wanted to make the name of their troupe memorable, so they named it “New Paradise Glove Puppetry Troupe”. Tu Wu was the head of the troupe and Qing Fa took over the post, taking control over the troupe.
