How it began

The Visit of the Main Temple (San-Sen Temple) of the Nan-Xing Community

Located to the west of Yuan-Lin railway, the nature environment of Nan-Ping Chateau’s early years were nothing but fields of green. The west side, the Ding Chateau, was occupied by villages of people mostly with the same last name of Yang. The east side, the Xia Chateau, was then occupied with people of five main last names: Feng, Chang, Huang, Lai and Lu. During the time when Japan was ruling Taiwan, the Japanese built railways and held Fon-Lee Co. to the west of the Nan-Ping Rail today. With the ruling by a foreign race, people needed the spiritual stability.

Due to the needs of the citizenry, the local gentries, used the nearby Jing-Hua Hall as the mother hall, built Xi-Shou Hall at the Chang’s in Xia Chateau, and offered their respect to Guan-Yin and Bao-Gong. The first hall manager was Mr. De-He Chang. Ju Chang, Shu Yang, Si-San Chang amd Ping Wu came afterwards and dedicated their efforts as managers. More and more believers came to pay their respect.

During the 1960s, Ping Wu started the movement to build the temple. Through the donation of property and money from the devotees, the temple was built at Ding Chateau in Nan-Ping Village in 1965, and was named as San-Sen Temple. The main hall pays respect to Wen Heng Di Jun, Si Ming Chen Jun and Fu You Di Jun, as well as Bao Gong and Wu Inn General. The second floor paid respect to Guan Inn Da Si, and the address was No. 20, Lane 20, Sec. 1 Yuanda Rd., Yuanlin Township, and Ping Wu was the Hall Manager.

Xie Tian Bao Dian was later on built on the second floor to worship Xie Tian Da Di, Wu Ji Sheng Zu Dian was built to worship Wu Ji Sheng Zu, Ho Xian Gu Ting for Ho Xian Gu, and the Main Hall for Wen Heng Di Jun, Si Ming Chen Jun, Fu You Di Jun, Wen Chang Di Jun, and Xuan Tian Shan Di. Ping Wu passed away in 1993, and Shu Yang was assigned as the sixth Hall Manager. He formed the Manager Committee in 1995, and had Ping-Huai Gu as the first commissioner. Shu Yang passed away in 1997, and assigned Xiu-Zhu Chang-Yang and the seventh Hall Manager. Now Zhen-Xiong You, a councilor at Chang Hua County Hall, takes over the position as a commissioner in September 2002, with Principal Rong-Sen Huang as the Chairman. They lead the team to actively expand the affairs of the temple, in order to manifest the power of the temple, as well as the fine tradition.

San-Sen Temple is located in Nan-Xing Village, the Western District of Yuanlin Township. The residents share three main last names: You, Yang and Huang. Yuanlin Senior High School, Yuanlin Junior High and Jing-Siou Elementary school are located nearby, as well as the West District Fire Department, Ju-Guang Police Department and Ba Bao Jun Canal. The construction of 30 meters wide road that goes around the temple is convenient for the redecoration of the appearance of the temple. The Committee is working on fund raising, and will move the entrance monument to the west side.

The evolving of the San-Sen Temple, as well as the long history it brings, are worthy a visit for all of us. We can appreciate the architecture art, listen to the stories about faith and experience the atmosphere of the worshipping ceremony. It is considered to be a meaningful movement if we put the effort to record this local treasure and pass it to the next generation.
